As the third year of the COVID-19 epidemic drew to a close, China’s strategy moved from managing the spread of the virus to encouraging economic development. China’s economy and social order responded positively, and major cities began to recover, despite the epidemic being far from over.

2022 witnessed a series of conflicts centered around geopolitical fractions, economic burdens and ideological differences. But a true thawing could see China, as well as all the major powers, truly at the negotiation table for deescalating the conflict and facilitating global cooperations.

We live in an era where international relations are best described with the phrase globalized balkanization. There are two terms to unpack here – the metaphor of balkanization, and the caveat and addendum of it being a global phenomenon.

The 22nd year of the 21st century will come to an end amid a worldwide sentiment that unity will continue to evade us.Are there signs that we can begin to mediate any of the above conditions?

Clearly, this is the time to re-imagine a new Bretton Woods agreement – Bretton Woods II. The world faces new challenges. It will take a high-level gathering of world leaders to resolve them.
