On December 10, 2021, a ceremony was held to welcome Dr. Tian Jin as a senior fellow of Taihe Institute.

Dr. Tian Jin holds a Doctorate of Management and is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Vice-Chairman of the All-China Journalists Association (ACJA), and Vice-Chairman of China Federation of Radio and Television Associations.

He has previously worked in the General Office and the General Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the United Front Work Department of CPC Central Committee, the Hong Kong Branch of Xinhua News Agency (now the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong S.A.R.), the State Council Information Office of PRC, and the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of PRC.

Dr. Tian Jin has experienced a number of major historical events during his career. These include the Third Plenary Session of the 11th CPC Central Committee in 1978 as well as its Central Working Conference before the Session and the return of Hong Kong in 1997 and Macau in 1999.

For more than 20 years, Dr. Tian Jin worked in the publicity and cultural department, participating in the formulation of a series of major policies and the promotion of the reform and development of national publicity and cultural communication. The addition of Dr. Tian Jin as a senior fellow of Taihe Institute will further strengthen and expand the Institute's research capabilities in the areas of social management and domestic and international communication.

Dr. Tian Jin delivered a speech at the ceremony. A translated version of his speech is provided below.

First of all, I would like to thank Taihe Institute for officially adding me as a senior fellow.

I have taken note of Taihe Institute's development over the past few years. I am delighted to see that in the less than 10 years since its establishment, Taihe Institute has strengthened its research capacities, expanded its research areas, deepened its research topics, and yielded fruitful results.

Taihe Institute has become more well-known and influential, and received acknowledgement from leaders of various departments of the central government as well as from other social institutions. It is particularly worth mentioning that a large number of young talents have dedicated themselves to Taihe Institute, contributing significantly to its innovative development.

I have worked in central government agencies for a long time. While the past decades have tempered my experience, the schedule of daily work did not allow much time for the conduct of profound research. It is, therefore, my great honor to join Taihe Institute. I seek to learn from my new colleagues and welcome all comments. In doing so, I will also strive to achieve the following three goals.

First, I shall always adhere to the right direction because direction determines destiny. By seizing upon the right direction, Taihe Institute has grown rapidly and achieved outstanding results over a short period of time. The most important thing for me, as a newcomer to Taihe Institute, is to stand firm on the position of the Party and the country, and to strengthen consciousness of the need to maintain political integrity; to think in big-picture terms, uphold the leadership core, and to keep in alignment; to fortify confidence in the socialist path, theories, system, and culture with Chinese characteristics; to uphold President Xi Jinping's core position on the Party Central Committee and in the Party as a whole, and to uphold the Central Committee's authority and its centralised and unified leadership. I will learn in-depth and implement Xi Jinping's thought on socialism with Chinese characteristics in the new era with a high degree of political awareness. For analysis of the new era, I will use Marxist standpoints, viewpoints and methods to observe and grasp key issues.

Second, I will always think in big-picture terms. It is because Taihe Institute adheres to the concept of "serving the needs of the times" that has gained popularity. In other words, Taihe Institute thinks in big-picture terms. As a researcher, I will think about issues from the perspectives of the Party, the country, the nation, and the people, plan for the long-term development of the Party and the country, and research topics that contribute to building a community with a shared future for humankind, achieving the second centenary goal, and realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the long-term stability of the country.

Third, I will always focus on key issues. The most efficient work method is to do overall planning and focus on key points. Taihe Institute is a “civil think tank” with ambitions to serve the country and the world. It is committed to producing high-quality content and contributing to decision-making for national development.

Taihe Institute has accepted commissions from relevant departments in the fields of international relations, economics and finance, science and technology, education and culture, and ethnicity and religion. It has been commissioned by some local governments to carry out regional economic and social research, and established cooperation with nearly a hundred Chinese and international institutions, and it has also established joint research mechanisms with a number of universities and institutes. All of this has laid a solid foundation for its development. I think the current economic, social, cultural and international relations studies carried out by Taihe Institute is the focus of the new era in the international community of think tanks.

I have been engaged in national and cultural publicity for a long time. I worked on Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan affairs, including ethnic and religious work, as well as international communication and publicity. I will try my best to serve in the study of the above areas, especially in the fields of culture and people's livelihood. President Xi Jinping has emphasized that:

“[T]he people's desire for a better life is the goal we strive to realize, […] Fortify confidence in the socialist path, theories, and system, especially in culture, which is the most fundamental. […] Without a high degree of confidence in culture and cultural prosperity, there will be no great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

Socialist modernization should be a modernization that is rich in material and spirituality. We can also cooperate with relevant parties, conduct in-depth research, and contribute suggestions to decision-making in cultural and social areas, including education, health, elderly care, environmental protection, rural revitalization, common prosperity, social civilization, and other fields of common concern to the central government and the people. These issues are major issues related to the long-term and sustainable development of the country.

I hope and believe that Taihe Institute will excel and exceed!
