On May 8, the Taihe Institute had an online dialogue with the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP), where experts from both think tanks discussed the potential direction of China-U.S. relations and how to prevent bilateral relations from worsening amid the COVID-19 outbreak.
Experts from both sides expressed deep concern about the erosion of mutual trust between China and the U.S. during the COVID-19 outbreak, and what the future might hold for bilateral relations. They believed that working to manage differences and build cooperation is critical to boost the global fight against the epidemic and stimulate world economic recovery. Meanwhile, experts said that due to the friction in the China-U.S. relations, dialogue between officials from both countries was limited, and against such a backdrop, think tanks could play an important role in enhancing dialogue and easing tensions in China-U.S. relations.
Currently, the rapid spread of the epidemic not only is a major test of the health care systems throughout the world, but also deals a heavy blow to China-U.S. relations. How to bridge the differences and avoid falling into the “Thucydides Trap” require joint efforts from both China and the U.S. In the future, Taihe Institute will further strengthen exchanges with U.S. think tanks and the U.S. academic community, and seek to contribute to the development of more stable and healthy China-U.S. relations.
