On October 18th, 2018, co-organized by South East Asia Association and School of International Relations at Peking University, the third China-ASEAN Youth Summit was held at the Yingjie International Exchange Center at Peking University. Representatives from ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN Women’s Federation and Asian Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and international students from more than ten countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand, Myanmar and Singapore gathered together with Chinese students to review and discuss the history and prospects of China-ASEAN strategic partnership and carried out in-depth exchanges on topics such as digital economy, green development, transnational crime, and Lancang-Mekong cooperation. The Taihe Institute was invited to the summit.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. AKP Mochtan, Deputy Secretary-General of the ASEAN Secretariat, delivered a speech, stating that when we talk about youth, we are actually talking about hope. Youth is the hope of every country and that of the world. Meanwhile, youth is also the power that will lead the world. Young people alter the future through innovation, and constantly bring positive changes to the world in digital technology, new media and intelligent development. Young students should maintain their vitality and cherish their time in exploring new opportunities in China-ASEAN cooperation, and coping with global crisises and challenges together.

Ms. YANG Xiuping, former Chinese Ambassador to ASEAN and former Secretary-General of China-ASEAN Center also delivered a speech, stressing the unbreakable feature of China-ASEAN strategic partnership. In the future, the goal of strategic cooperation between the two sides is clearer, namely responding to the “Belt and Road” Initiative and working together to create “a community of shared future for mankind”. At the same time, the path of China-ASEAN’s strategic cooperating is also clearer. Ms. YANG also claimed that youths are the bond of China-ASEAN relations, as well as the inheritor and pioneer of China-ASEAN cooperation. Young people should work hard and think bravely to enhance exchanges and create a better future.

Seminars on different themes were held from October 18th to 20th, covering topics such as the establishment of the ASEAN smart city network, China-ASEAN youth innovation blueprint, ASEAN 10+6 marine non-traditional security cooperation, youth action plan for the green development of Lancang-Mekong region, youth think tank research program for East Asian countries, and the effectiveness tracking and improvement plan of human trafficking governance.

YI Di, Vice Chairman of Taihe Institute, was invited to share his views in the penal discussion at the opening ceremony. He said that the Taihe Institute, as a member of the Chinese non-governmental think tanks, would further provide more platforms for exchanges and cooperation between China and ASEAN countries, and continuously conduct researches in relavant fields. The Taihe Institute is committed to making greater contributions to the sustained and healthy development of the China-ASEAN strategic partnership.
