HOU Jiaru, Senior Researcher at Taihe Institute, Professor at the Chinese University of Political Science and Law, and Director at the Law Negotiation Research Association of the Beijing Law Society

HOU Jiaru, Senior Researcher at Taihe Institute, Professor at the Chinese University of Political Science and Law, and Director at the Law Negotiation Research Association of the Beijing Law Society, shared his research findings on Sino-U.S. trade negotiations. To begin with, he provided an in-depth analysis of current U.S. negotiation strategies by employing the Dual Concerns Model and IPR Model (interest-based strategy, power-based strategy, right-based strategy), taking Trump’s personality into account. Then, using strategic, psychological, organizational, and cultural aspects of Sino-U.S. negotiations, he discussed the probability of a stalemate, as well as the potential complexity of the situation. Finally, using the ZTE case as an example, he identified China’s difficulties with strategy, mechanism and teamwork within the negotiations.

During the discussion session, participating researchers offered their views on the status quo of Sino-U.S. trade relations as well as outlining the risks and potential outcomes from political, economic and cultural perspectives. They also provided suggestions for more effective trade negotiations.

CUI Liru, Senior Researcher at Taihe Institute

LIU Jinghui, Senior Researcher at Taihe Institute

Sino-U.S. trade negotiations are closely related to trends of trade dispute between both countries. Economic and trade issues will continue to be an important aspect of the strategic relations between China and the U.S. for many years to come. These are major practical issues that must be closely followed and thoroughly studied during the transitional period of Sino-U.S. relations. Taihe Institute will pay close attention to such issues, and will hold seminars regularly in response to contingent circumstances. The Institute aspires to provide insightful and valuable advice for dealing with Sino-U.S. Trade Dispute in a proper manner.
